Use call control on your phone and stop others making calls other than local

Enable call control (call baring)

Stop your kids or worse others (including adult dialers from software your kids may have downloaded) dialing 1900, international or national phone numbers without your consent.

Enable call control (call baring) to help protect yourself from a scary phone bill.

To prevent this from happening, call your phone company and ask how these numbers can be blocked.

If you are in Australia:

Call control is turned ON by dialing into your phone:

Call control is turned OFF by dialing into your phone:

#33PIN#

Disable call waiting

Call "waiting" is a service that all new phone lines have turned on automatically and existing phone lines can have turned on as an option. What it does is send a series of short tones to advise you when a second call is on the line.

The problem with using a modem and having call waiting switched on, is that the little short tones it sends may cause your modem to drop the connection. As a dialup technican for an ISP, I know for a fact, this does happen.

So if using a dialup modem make sure you turn call waiting off.
